Prefab CFS Framing for Data Centers: Built in the Shop, Ready for the Schedule

Untitled design (43)

Data centers demand precision, coordination, and speed. With extensive electrical and mechanical infrastructure, specialized cooling systems, and miles of cabling to accommodate, the framing system must do more than define the space. It must support a construction process in which multiple trades depend on accurate layouts, predictable installation, and tight sequencing.

Prefabricated cold-formed steel (CFS) framing helps meet these demands by moving much of the work from the jobsite into a controlled manufacturing environment. Wall panels and other framing components can be produced to project specifications, improving consistency, reducing field measuring and cutting, and allowing installation to proceed more efficiently. That means fewer variables for the framing crew to manage in the field and a more predictable handoff to the electrical, mechanical, and drywall trades that follow.

In a project where schedule delays can have significant downstream consequences, shifting framing work into the shop can help reduce onsite labor demands, improve quality control, and keep critical activities moving. The value isn’t simply that the framing can be prefabricated; it’s that a more precise, coordinated framing process can help support the pace and complexity of data center construction.

We’ve been rolling cold-formed steel in Connecticut since 2018. Here’s how we approach data center framing, and why more of the work belongs in a shop than in the field.

Why prefab CFS fits data center construction

Precision where it counts. Roll-formed CFS is cut to exact length, with service holes and openings punched by machine. Walls stay straight and plumb, which matters when racks, tray and busway need to line up.

It doesn’t move. Steel is dimensionally stable. It won’t warp, shrink, split, or creep with moisture, so what’s set in week two is still true years later.

Non-combustible. Steel won’t add fuel to a fire. CFS framing is used in UL-listed wall assemblies with 1-, 2-, and 3-hour fire ratings, which makes it a natural fit for the rated partitions and shaft walls data centers require.

Fast installs coordinated up front. Framing arrives as prefabricated wall panels or cut, punched, and labeled components, so it goes up quickly. BIM coordination happens ahead of time, so we solve conflicts with other trades before anything ships.

Built for repetition. Campus and multi-phase builds repeat wall types. Once a profile is detailed, it can be run again across buildings with the same accuracy. It’s the same way we approach multifamily and healthcare projects, where repeated unit and room layouts reward getting the details right once.

Lighter and recyclable. CFS weighs less than comparable wood or concrete assemblies and is 100% recyclable, a plus for owners with sustainability targets.

Model, coordinate, fabricate, install

A conflict caught in a coordination meeting takes a few minutes to talk through. The same conflict found by a framing crew stops work, triggers an RFI, and pulls in another trade. The goal is to have that conversation weeks earlier.

  1. Model. We detail the framing in a Revit based software, starting with the congested spots: wall tops, large openings, louvers, and anywhere a tray, busway, duct, or pipe crosses a wall.
  2. Coordinate. We work out how each wall actually gets built. Does it run to structure or stop below something? How is the opening framed? Does another trade need access before it closes?
  3. Fabricate. The coordinated detail goes straight to our roll former. Members come off the line cut, punched, and labeled to match the model, so the information doesn’t get lost between office and shop.
  4. Install. Panels and components arrive sequenced and ready to set, whether our sister company, Network Interiors, frames it or your crew does.

Not every wall belongs in the shop. Part of our job is helping the team sort what makes sense to prefabricate and what should stay field-built.

Why Network Framing Solutions

We were here first. NFS is southern New England’s first and only roll former. Founded in 2018, we’ve been producing CFS Prefabricated Framing longer than most of the region has known what it is. Being early meant learning faster, and it means every package we send out has more real field experience behind it.

Women-owned and WBENC-certified. NFS is founded and led by Melissa Sheffy. For owners and GCs with supplier diversity goals, we’re a certified women-owned business enterprise that also happens to be a manufacturer.

Trusted installers, if you want them. Our sister company, Network Interiors, is a commercial metal framing and drywall contractor that knows our product inside and out. In southern New England, you can get fabrication and installation from one connected team. Elsewhere, we supply your local crew with a kit and stay on call through the install.

We ship anywhere. Our shop is in Plainville, Connecticut. Your project doesn’t have to be. Framing is fabricated here, bundled and labeled by location, and shipped directly to your site.

We like being useful. Send us drawings early, even if you’re not sure CFS is the answer. We’ll tell you what we can prefabricate, where it saves time and where it doesn’t. We’d rather be the team you call with questions than the one you only call for a quote.

Have a data center package with CFS scope?

Send us the framing drawings, model or outline schedule. We’ll come back with what can be prefabricated, where it helps the critical path and what delivery and install would look like for your site.
